What does it mean to be a Christian Sorority?
We are a Christian social sorority. We are founded in Christ first, and secondly in Sisterhood. We encourage one another to grow in love through life in Christ. Sigma Alpha Omega® is a great way to get involved and enjoy college while still remaining true to your identity as a woman of God.
What are the benefits of being in a nationally recognized Christian sorority?

Do I have to be a specific denomination in order to join?
No. Sigma Alpha Omega® is a non-denominational/inter-denominational organization. As long as you are in alignment with our profession of faith, you are eligible to join.
Do I have to be part of a church or fellowship in order to join?
We highly recommend potential candidates and sisters be part of a church or fellowship on campus or in the local Newport News area in addition to being sisters of Sigma Alpha Omega®.
Is it possible to hold a leadership position in your chapter?
Of course! Sorority-wide elections are held each spring to determine the new executive board members for the following year. Each semester, sisters may volunteer to chair committees.
How is Sigma Alpha Omega® different than other sororities?
Sigma Alpha Omega® sisters plan and participate in socials, fundraising events, service projects, retreats, and Bible studies rooted in Jesus Christ. The sorority consists of and is led directly by CNU students, which helps foster leadership and communication skills in all sisters. Sisters meet and connect with other active and alumnae sisters at the Sigma Alpha Omega® National Convention every year. We are joyful to have formed bonds with sisters from different fellowships who have come together in the sorority who we otherwise would not have known!
Is Sigma Alpha Omega® Panhellenic?
No. Sigma Alpha Omega® is recognized as an independent national non-profit organization; therefore, we follow a different schedule for information sessions and recruitment. Visit our Recruitment page for more information.
Does Sigma Alpha Omega® have any alcohol/hazing policies?
Yes. We must follow the federal, state, provincial, college/university regulations on alcohol consumption and hazing according to national sorority policies. There is to be no consumption of alcohol at sorority functions and/or while wearing Sigma Alpha Omega® shirts. We also recommend sisters of age exercise discernment when deciding to drink alcohol to set examples for our members and to maintain the reputation of Sigma Alpha Omega®. Additionally, our sorority does not tolerate any form of hazing (subtle, harassment, and/or violent) in alignment with Jesus’ commandment to “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” (Luke 6:31).
